Three problems with Vista:
1. Driver support just isn't there...yet
2. Mainstream computer users don't have the hardware required to run it properly...yet (which is partly why manufacturers aren't hurrying to sort out the driver issue)
3. There isn't much that a mainstream user NEEDS Vista for...yet

It's only early adopters who will be trying it out; the curious and the "got to have the latest"

In time (12 months or so) many users will probably switch over to Vista.

Until people perceive a need to switch, they probably won't

None of these things are M$'s fault, but the release of an operating system alone shouldn't be the driving force behind the production and purchase of hardware....that's the tail wagging the dog IMO.

That said, as a M$ platform developer Vista (and .NET 3.0) has some really cool features that I'm looking forward to using, so from that point of view I'm a fan.
Looking at it from an end-user's point of view currently (as mentioned previously): "it's shiney and slow.....so what ?"

When I buy a new computer, it'll have Vista on it, but I won't bother to upgrade to it.
However the new licencing bs makes me want to ditch windows entirely.

Get CSS to run on Ubuntu for me, and I'll switch ASAP.

1. There is drivers for all my stuff. The problem is that Creative and nvidia does pretty bad drivers. You cant blame microsoft for this.
2. I agree to some extend. Not all users need Aero, so vista home basic will do, and still perform well on an old computer. But people shouldnt buy vista without a new computer.
3. Yet people will notice that Vista is lovely. The search functions, office 2007, a lots more stable enviorment, media center, all kinds of media things, etc. is really gonna be nice for the user.

Mike's right - joe public couldn't give two hoots about the stuff they can't see and if nothing seems any different why pay new money for old rope?

I liked ME

Windows was behind the times, its now with the times - it may not be ahead of the times, but who is?

Putting the price aside (hard as it may be) vista seems to me to be a worthwhile upgrade.

Yeah, and Microsoft will be with times until what a couple of months before something hands its ass back to them...

My dad got it and its not user friendly, for example, you try putting Borland Delphi 6 onto XP boom no problems... Put Borland Delphi 6 onto Vista wants to screw you over until you find these hidden freaking tick boxes that allow somthing to just make it work :| ... Logic in that?

It looks good i admit that, i didnt like the fact that an Administrator should have automatically all the rights but when you and do something it says to you something along the lines of your not administrator eve though you are logged on as one... So somewhere in the crap as menu's there is another tick box that allows you to be administrator...

They have over complicated it i think...
Vista is not worth buying in my opinion, and i will gladly stick with XP

M dad has two Partitions one for Vista and one for Xp yet everytime i go tot he kitchen and walk past his computer and say why you not using Vista
"Because half the stuff wount run or be converted across"

8)
Great operating system 8)

Like i stated above not everything will run and somethings just take so much effort id hardly call it a user friendly package

Thats because the applications are badly made. Its that simple.

The UAC is simple, and very effective.
Just run the program in question as an administrator, and theres not alot of problems.

Or just disable UAC...

I think chadk has a point with poorly made programs - I don't know what it is but I'm sure he's got something

I used RC1 for a short while, and I have to admit, I liked it.

The only problems software wise that I had was with OpenGL based games as the drivers were not available for ATI cards at the time.

But it was totally stable all the time and I never had any problems with it, and yes, it is shiny and nice to use.

I'm not a business user, programmer or anything like that, but it was good to use and have a nosey at.

It's more of a complete rewrite rather than a revision upgrade, so why expect it to work?

TBH I would guess 99.99999999999999999999999999% of Vista users won't use Borland, so why would MS bother making it compatible?

As to the pricing, thats up to MS... ripped off - possibly.

Speaking of rip-offs then, the second production run of Ferrari Enzos all sold for £425,000 yet each cost 40,000 Euro's only to make 8)

Well my experience with Vista is that its really nice to use just generally like browsing internet and stuff like that, but it criples games.

For this reason I'm formatting comp and going back to XP tomorrow and will put some upgrades on it so it looks similar to Vista again as I really like its interface :)..

In conclusion: you need a pretty good comp for vista..
