Playing it down as some sort of niche product that is going to struggle against established storage mediums, can't even be put down to naivety. IBM had working prototypes 20 years ago ffs. I was reading an article on El Reg last year, where a company had the disc format sorted for release this year, but soon to be supplanted by a static medium with a higher recording density. when DVD was first released the press were all 'nobody will ever need that much storage space in the home' - most of us can't wait for 600GB!!
Amusingly, when IBM wheeled out their first PC, the comment at the time was 'nobody will ever need more than 640kb'
This numpty must have seen 2001 the other week on TCM and put 2 + 2 together after the climactic scene where HAL is pulled apart...
