El Reg: Mac OS X Leopard - Time Machine

Like System Restore on XP, but lets you backup to external drives/network shares. ....and it lives in space

heard about this, but they make it sound like you can recover individual files - whereas I've never really used the Backup on windows because I lose all changes made (don't I, not sure - not read up on it).

Sounded like a great idea, but for me - i'd have to remember to use the damned thing

you can recover any file from any day in it's history........and theres nothing to remember. you plug in a drive, it automatically says 'use as timemachine', you say yes and it copies your hd.
from them on it takes condensed images of everything you do every day......as long as the drive is plugged in. so you can literally use say for eg a Wav that has been distructively editted.......15 times......and go back to review each one independent of having mulitple history undo's in the app it was created in...

I assume you can use it to a second hdd instead of just an external one though, I also assume in the next few years people can use a pen drive (as in they'll have enough capacity) :o

yep - you can use a secondary hd...but not many macs with more than one....except mac pro's (like mine :D). pen drives are fine - just as long as they have the capacity.....any drive would be....

BUT.....golden rule of back ups.....make sure that you can store them away from your machine.....in case of fire / flood etc..... or you devalue the backup considerably....so you'd want it on an external drive.
