Its just an extra layer of protection, have you ever seen anyone create a user account on a windows system, and not make themselves an administrator?
If you've got Vista, type 'advanced' in the search box, open the firewall up, and have a peek at the rules in depth....
If you remember a couple of years back, the original Vista kernel was completely locked down, it was the lawsuits from anti-virus companies that forced MS to open it all up
As to dominant market position, don't start me on Apple & iTunes
Let alone sneaking Safari in without telling anyone as part of an itunes udate
