OK, had an idea today which I think is clever(ish). Mate at work has a 12 year old boy, who is very quietly spoken and doesn't really appear to show any signs of movement that often and so on. Get him on msn and all of a sudden he may aswell be a 32 year old 6ft5 black gangster called leroy. Basically, his english at school is terrible apparantly, can hardly string a sentence together and his spelling is atrocious. Wonder if it would be possible to install some form of dictionary into the likes of msn which doesn't allow you to send the message until it has passed a brief spell check? I'm sure many parents would welcome the idea with open arms as I know I would. Obviously there would be some form of password system in place, else it would be bugger all use for the parents for sending links etc... over msn. But you see my point and would it be a viable product?

Sounds like a good idea but messenger is not oen source so adding bit to it would seem impossible. But there are plenty of open source msn compatible messengers out there that could be modified. Trouble is getting him to use one of those instead of MSN messenger.
Let us know what you find out.

Let us know what you find out. Yeah, well my meaning was for the parent (administrator) to install the program be it msn or whichever other system and the child to have no choice in the matter to use. And the program would not allow a message to be sent until it is in the queens english as it were. So the dictionary is essentially enforced on them. There is all this talk nowadays which I am all for about using correct spellings as some of the abbreviations get on my tits to be honest. Don't know about the rest of you on that, and I'm sure most parents would approve of some system being in place to stop their kids typing like idiots

Aren't there some spelling games on the DS and suchlike which may be a bit more entertaining and a bit less frustrating to use?

Well theres Cybersitter but I think that only filters words. Theres also http://www.msgpluslive.net/ which you can install which has scripts that integrate with Windows live messenger.

i'm sure someone has made/could make one for libpurple for pidgin and adium. it certainly has a dictionary plugin, so you should be able to extend that. the trick is not to supply the correct spelling, but only to indicate what words have been spelt wrong. actually, can we get one for the forum while we're at it?
