Bit of an Update. Google Android made an appearance at the Google developer Conference... some pretty cool features on there, should be interesting to see what other handsets it gets released on

I'd post something more relevant, but apparently the mobile safari browser can't open links it doesn't recognize. So no htttp links until I get to the desktop

So what you are saying is that you are a apple fanboy who doesn't check the specs of your new phone to be before buying it. I think I will go send some picture messages on my phone and then maybe browse the web using the 3g connection.

ouch, no need to be so harsh mate :D

and i won't bother to explain why i bought my ipod (not iphone), seeing as you probably wouldn't care either way. but please don't insult my intelligence by saying i just buy crap because people think it's cool

(i can now see why you reacted like that, but i wasn't being a fanboy, i didn't even know what android was )

but about google android, i didn't know google was making a mobile os, how exactly does the open source bit work? companies would include it with the phone for free, or would you be able to overwrite a different os with android? :)

it looks interesting, especially the compass simulating maps are a nice touch 8)

It'll be good to see another major player entering the smart phone OS market - at the moment its pretty much just symbian and microsoft, with a handfull of blackberry and others. There are already a bunch of linux based oses, but none of them really strong, mostly made on a made to fit basis for each phone. However, as it's going to face the same disadvantages that linux has against osx (and the same advantages), in that os x just works.

Microsoft and symbian appear to be a little overconfident that google will fail - fantastic quote from symbian

"We have already shipped 222 different phone models with the eight leading phone manufactureres of the world. We have got 12 years' experience in doing this , and that knowledge is very precious.
I'm not saying that people in Google aren't clever as well, but this a different kind of roket science from for example the rocket science that's involved in search. That experience can't just be duplicated overnight, no matter how clovere people are."

hahahaha....they have no idea :D

(ps symbian sucks balls, but not as much as windows mobile. go symbian!)

Tjolbi - sorry my reply sounded a bit harsh, thought you were going for a "oh look at me, I have an iphone type comment" (I toned down my comment just in case I was wrong). I used to use a nano, 1. because at the time there were no better alternatives 2. it was free.

I actually thought about getting a touch but will be going with a eee pc instead ( thats if asus realise their pricing is fraked up and the reason people were buying them in the 1st place was the price) as all my music needs are now supplied by a rather snazzy sony 16 Gb walkman. The touch looks very pretty tho.

Back to the topic at hand. I read somewhere that there is a Ubuntu mobile OS in the works. Designed for UMPCs, subnotebooks etc... maybe even phones. Would be cool to be in a situation where buying your phone is like buying a PC, choose the specs and OS and then add the apps and games you want. hell, 10 years ago I was using a Nokia 3210, now I have a phone that gets me my email, rss feeds, word processing etc... and it even calls people. In ten years I hope to have a device that does everything ( I would like one with a flexble OLED screen that can be pulled out ala 'Earth:final conflict')

They can afford to be over-confident, Symbian have beaten M$ at their own game and hold most of the mobile market after a number of years. That isn't to say that Android can't make inroads into mobile territory and I suspect it will beat the iPhone into a distant 4th place, due to Apple's desperate urge to control every facet of their merchandise and restrict their OS's to their own hardware. :beye:

no worries jim, after reading what google android was it made my comment seem a bit snotty yeah, your reply was understandable

the Ubuntu mobile OS might be good, but wouldn't there be a problem distributing it for phones? i'm guessing most companies would prefer a paying os so they could make a profit on that as well?

Hate to say this, but I've been keeping a track on some of the videos of Android in action.
My phone contract is up early 2009 and my next phone may well be one running android.
I like the idea that it isn't symbian (which always seems a little arsey on my N95) and it's not lining the pockets of apple via iROBYOUOFYOURMONEY.
Open source and everything laid on a plate for people to develop whatever they want for free sounds good to me thank you very much.
Just need a phone to look a little less clunky than the G1 by Marchish next year and I'll be a happy bunny.

Yeah, I'd seen that already a few days back somewhere, only relevant if someone was to know what it was, then plant it in a website, and then someone else view that website, so not that big a problem seeing as it would have been a dodgy untrusted site anyway.
But either way, by march, it will be just as insecure as anything else on the market, what good is just 1 security flaw?

I went to the Linux / Mac show down in Olympia or how ever you spell it in London with the Old man and a friend. They were talking about the mobile ubuntu OS.

But just remember that 3210 had snake :P
