Right my desktop atm is quite minimalist and i'm using rocketdock for all my icons
I've been using open office for around a year and i really liked you could just open that then choose to make a new Word, Excel or whatever file without having to run the seperate icon for each program
so basically i had 1 icon instead of 3 or 4

Now i've *ahem* acquire the enterprise edition of Office 2007 and it doesnt have a nice launcher like open office did

So i could just run a shortcut to the folder and give it a nice icon right?
but i want something more purdddy, i dont want jus plain old file explorer to come up
any ideas?

I've got an old orifice program that uses an autohiding shortcutbar jobby. You can add what icons you like. (Sounds like offices version of rocketdock?)
Any who there's a New Orifice document icon on it that opens a selection window. I'm guessing something similar will be there for you somewhere.

Had a search around for it but to no avail : /
I remember the office toolbar though, how do you get that to come up on your office? might give me a clue for this one...

k, looks like they ditched it....

But, If you find the Start> Progs> Office> "New document" icon isn't letting you start any document you want try this maybe?

because it's better/more widely supported?

but also...I don't understand the problem - what's wrong with four shortcuts? with the template options you're going to have far more than four. if you know which program you want to launch, just launch it. may I point you in the direction of Launchy, a rather useful app for windows that renders the start menu and desktop worthless.

gnumeric and latex do it for me :)

Aye i used open office for ages and Office 07 just looks nicer, format wise, easier to work with for me as its more familiar

Naaah elbow with the Template thing i have just one icon on Rocket dock called "Office"
which lets me create a new document in any office program i want
as opposed to having word, excel etc etc icons on my nice lookin minimalist rocket dock

as for launchy i find it more intuative and quick to just hover to top of my screen where the rocketdock pops up with all the programs i ever use rather than clickin on that launchy thing then typing what i want then clickin go

Spose what works for me is hell for someone else, and vice versa

EDIT: Jus had a play with launchy, i can see how you can grow for it to be natural, shouldnt have been so quick to dismiss it, good lil piece of software

I use osx, which has an equivalent program called quicksilver, and I use the dock and the launcher together - the dock has all the really common programs, and everything else is on quicksilver, makes it a lot easier to hunt out odd apps. doesn't really solve your problem I know, but god damn it's the best third party windows app ever :D
