Firefox.

We all love it (most anyway ;)) BUT I have a pet peeve - I have about 20 tabs open atm and this is the screenshot from task manager:

then when I quit:

then when I restart it:

it gets bigger from there? Why should FF use 1.4Gb of RAM just to display 20 tabs? Would understand if they ALL included streaming video or something but they're not.

WHY?

640K of ram should be enough for anyone.

I've noticed it before too, just firefox being open it uses more and more RAM. Well it dosent anymore since i last upgraded.

Memory Leak? god knows, surely it makes it susceptible to buffer overflow attacks?

What, exactly are your tabs displaying :o

I've just opened 20 tabs, loaded 20 pages, memory usage varies between 98-120 no cpu.

Okay, 3 OGame tabs, two GCHQ forum tabs, 3 galaxytool tabs, 2 other forum tabs, OGame calculator site (JS), Takana's CR converter, Gamestats.org, a ogame clone (Xuniverse), Loldogs, my blog, myspace and 2 other tabs that relate to CSS menus in webpages.

A bit of flash but seriously

UPDATE KIDS! \o/

It appears that FF3 has a limit setting in Linux but NOT Windows and Mac. (Checked my Panther Mac running FF 3.04)

This could possibly be due to the Ubuntu community putting in a FF3 Ubuntu add-on which (I believe) may fix the caching issue (because it's already set to this amount).

So, how to fix?
1) Open a new tab and type about:config and hit enter.
2) A dialog may appear saying something like: Here be dragons or This may viod your warranty, etc. Ignore this and click "I'll be careful, I promise".
3) Search for: Urlclassifier.updatecachemax and double click it.
4) Type in 104857600 and click Ok.
5) Restart FF.

This SHOULD keep it around 100Mb. If this doesn't solve the issue, try in Safe Mode and (by process of elimination) work out WHICH plugin is leaking.

So far, I have tried this for about 25 mins and it has made a major difference... but I'll keep an eye on it. If I find any plugins that leak, I'll post again. Source is here if anyone needs it. \o/  :thumbl:

UPDATE: Didn't fix the issue entirely with the current plug-in set I had enabled. So using "process of elimination" method to find out which one is bleeding RAM

I'll start a new thread for this :thumbl:

When I mentioned before that the config change didn't fix the issue, I meant that it lowered the amount of RAM used from 1.4Gb-ish down to about half but the issue was that it was STILL leaking. It's hovering about 100-125Mb atm, which considering what it WAS, is MUCH better. :thumbl:

I'm down to 3 plugins left to enable and hopefully one of those is the culprit  otherwise, I don't know what I'll do
