In response to this thread, I have started a new topic.

I asked what the difference between Google's Chrome and Mozilla Firefox (it does use a version of Chrome)?

So, post away. Hit me with pros and cons, hits and misses, the differences between them both, why one is better than the other, etc...

One is made by Google, which attracts similar levels of fan-dom immediate "must have" type behaviour that Apple does.

One is made by Mozilla, which primarily hit it's niche as it supposedly didn't suffer the same vulnerabilities that Internet Explorer did, whilst also rendering (supposedly) web pages correctly - which caught on well with the Microsoft haters around the world. It also had add-ons obviously too :D

TBH Opera did all this and more before Firefox or IE, and better as well. I think due to the fact it used to have a paid and a free version, it never caught on with "fan boy" type levels of reverence.

I use firefox, not because i'm against Google - although I do treat them with a high degree of scepticism due to their behaviour (they're not this friendly lovely hug-able company people appear to think they are) but until there's a good reason to switch to Chrome, I'll stick with Firefox. If there's a reason, I'll change... but when I used Chrome as it was being beta tested, I just couldn't help but think "erm, yeah. See no benefit other than it looks different", so stuck with familiarity (oh also Chrome doesn't have an OGame plugin... which probably features more heavily than any other reason at present :D)

Have Opera installed and use it infrequently... so Chrome staying installed would be identical. Perhaps if I used Opera more I'd use it as my main browser, perhaps if I used Chrome more I'd eventually use it as my main browser. I only think I prefer Firefox due to it being the one that was installed at work, uni and on linux as well... so simply got used to it.
I have no loyalty or fan-dom tendencies towards firefox either by the way, I think they release as many updates for as many vulnerabilities as IE does.

So if someone can present some solid good reasons (and not that it's faster when you've got 20+ tabs open ) as to why one should be used over the other, then I'm listening :D

Firefox for me currently is pissing memory all over the place, which is why I want to get rid of it - I don't know if chrome is better, but it's got to be worth a try.

As for tabs, I browse with usually 10 tabs open, but that really doens't matter - if I have two tabs and one of them hangs, it takes down the other. With chrome, you shouldn't get that. Likewise, if flash goes tits up on me, no problem. Basically, it sounds like it should be more stable. Also, chrome uses webkit which I think is a better rendering engine - I'm pretty sure chrome beats firefox on the acid3 test.

Also firefox doesn't use chrome - GUIs tend to be called chromes, and google decided to call their browser chrome, just to be confusing.

Elbow, to help with all the useless flash content which insists on loading for each page I use the Firefox addon "Flashblock", basically with it I have to click on the flash image in order to load it up. This gives me more control over a website (which the end user should have in my opinion) and I think makes it a bit more secure since you don't quite know what all these flash adds are doing (since you can't even browse the source of it) (truth be told I'm not that keen on flash, for the reasons stated above and that every site and it's uncle seem to want to use it for no other reason then to give it some bling (even if it makes the site more confusing then without))

Personally at the moment I'm using both. I use Firefox for all the sites that I want to keep open between restarts, and Chrome for when I want to quickly search for something.

I have adblock to take out most flash ads, but unfortunately some sites you just can't use without flash - mostly my concern are video streamers that crash every now and again (and take ages to load)

tbh, installed Chrome again 5 minutes ago and tried it.

Making a post on a website and I encounter my first bug.
At the end of a line of text in a textarea, instead of wrapping correctly onto the next page I get what appears to be an indent of white space with just the last letter of the word after it.
If you delete the last letter, the wrap around is undone so it appears right at the end of the previous line.
So add the letter again, white space with letter on end. Highlight text, there is the rest of the word hidden :P

So, now the fun bit. I delete the word and it goes back onto the previous line as the wrap-around undoes, but it leaves the word on the line below. This word doesn't exist, I cannot select it, highlight it or anything.

:flower:

However, I shalt persevere - mainly as I can't be arsed to fiddle with my javascript settings to let firefox access my webmail, and Opera wouldn't let me TYPE in my email message

p.s At the top of this forum, do you see a dropped "0" on the "0 new messages" (assuming you've not just received one) in Chrome? :D

Aye, that much is true... and compared to when Safari was released as "beta" (which lasted all of five minutes, as it crashed non stop trying to do anything) this is way ahead of that.

Just still seriously hope they do something firefox-ish with the ability to set it to delete all cache, history and other stuff whenever you close/open it (effectively surfing in its incognito mode) instead of having to specifically select incognito mode or go in to try and delete your history separately each time!

Right now it's supposedly faster render speed is still hampered by actual internet connection :|

Okay everyone, now that you have Google Chrome installed, what is the memory and/or VM footprint comared to FF3? Run the SAME tabs (prolly disable plugins temporarily for the test) and report your findings here.

Now then, that was quite interesting in an odd kind of way.
Just opened them both up, started the same tabs in each, then sat and waited.
Chrome shows up as an amount of k per tab as far as I can work it out, so a quick tot up showed them both sitting at about 80,000k.
Left it for a minute or 2 (bearing in mind that all pages were fully loaded up by this time) and then FF3 just started climbing up and up and up peaking over 130,000k by the time I stopped it.

I'm no expert on these matters, but as far as I can work out, FF3 just nerfed itself in that test. No doubt other peoples results will vary, but that was interesting to say the least.
And before anyone starts, I've always used FF over any other browser, so am not biased towards chrome, just choose to use chrome at the moment due to its cleaner simpler interface. Only reason I ever brought up the subject was purely because everyone is always so quick to defend FF whether it is better in some cases or not.

Starting to use this more due to Firefox crashing when watching youtube, and a few other annoyances.

Wish they'd sort out the little bugs and change incognito to an option instead! I may then use it even more.

My experiences of FF3.
Not very good themes lol.

No seriously, its ok.
Its not a big improvement infact I found FF prior to there v.3 a bit faster and just nicer.

But for me I do love FF for the tabs. It never really crashed for me. Then a couple of weeks a go just would not open and saying I had to send a report of and would I like to continue opening FF. Obviouisly continue and still would not open. Plerghh whatever.

Had Chrome, IE and Opera so went between the lot.

For me Chrome is ever so simple. So simple its simpler than making bacon butties. Nice to look at. I found the toolbar / address a cool addition. Use it as a search engine or a web address.

Firefox sits at about 60,000k and when I get the issue of using it a lot or the point of crashing it only gets to 80,000.
Furthermore for me not a google fan boy etc... but Chrome has not once crashed for me.
