Anybody had/have issues with this?

It's been an ongoing annoyance for a while now. In a game, don't think it matters which game, but it happens in some more than others; game will crash and the message "nvlddmvm display driver has stopped working and recovered".

I've looked on the net regularly over the last year or so trying to find a solve, but no luck. I believe it is a Vista problem. Not sure if it is solely related to Nvidia cards. It happened when I had 2 x 8600gt Nvidia cards. I still have the problem with a new 9800gtx+.

Someone said today I should clean my drivers with a Driver Clean-Up Utility, but googling it gives me mixed opinions on the usefulness/trustworthiness of these things.

I'm going to check I have up-to-date drivers, again, now.

Any suggestions from those in the know appreciated.

I had a similar issue with an old ATI card, with ATI VPU Recover... sometimes it wouldn't manage to recover at all, and I'd end up having to hard boot the computer. It only ever happened when playing games (at the time, Rome Total War - it was new out back then ).

After much question asking, turns out I had a power supply that failed to deliver enough power to the gfx card, which was the cause of the issues. Upgraded PSU and never ever saw that error again.

Not saying that is your issue, but considering it's re-occurring despite having different GFX cards (all very power hungry ones), it's worth a look

Think I had that problem as well, new power supply and I have'nt seen it since neither.

Well, I installed driver 182.08 released 6 days ago, played for an hour or two (enough time for 2 or 3 crashes normally) and no crashes. I hope I've nailed it, but if it happens again I will certainly look into the PSU. I know that I have have enough to support the specs listed for the card - but marginally, and I had considered beefing that up somewhat anyway.

ack! Wishful thinking above. Not sorted after all.

Does that DCProSetup work with Vista Strangelove? It doesn't list it in the system requirements, and me being a noob at PC tech; worry that the instructions won't go as planned.

I disabled all the extra nvidia crap and haven't had issues since. Installs like a dream and after a restart or two, hates its own guts.

But the drivers seem to work fine, it's just the other Nvidia crap that shits itself

I disabled NvCpl, NvMcTray and nwiz from startup, as well as Nvsvc in the Services section.
How to temp disable this is go to the Start button, type in msconfig and enter. That should get you into msconfig. Click on the Services tab and untick Nvidia Display Services Manager. Click Apply. Click on the startup tab and untick that above and click ok. Restart machine and see what happens.

Since I did that, all has been well. Hope this helps

Bear in mind that the power output of PSU's are usually a "max" and not "sustained".

Additionally, the power required varies dependant upon the amount of processing it is required to do. Hence I never saw the issue until I played Rome Total War - at which point the game stretched the card to the max for graphics, and occurred most frequently whenever I did the "war" bit (you know, lots of lil blokes fighting ).

If you can just surf net and not have any issue, yet it occurs when you boot your most gfx intensive game...

its not nvidia alone..i get it on my ati 3870.... most times it recovers.....

i read and done everything from reg edits...drivers..you name it......some say it is a windows update...that you can uninstall....tried it...didnt work
having rivatune to increase the fan speeds for my gpu seemed to help...doesnt do it on most games...mainley on codwaw....so its prolly a game thing...
i know that if it happens...and i reboot....it seems to go away...
i just live with it now....lol

If it happens again, uninstall the driver, restart and install the latest one. Should sort it. You might want to check that it's got enough power feeding it and nothing else being powered from the same cable.

I will follow your advice Chips. Thing is, at the moment I am skint and can't afford to buy anything. But as soon as I have some cash, I'll get a new PSU. I've been putting up with this for a year or more; a couple more weeks/months won't be unbearable.
