American games wont work on a european PS2 will they?

We've got PAL format and the americans have erm....some other format. 
I think it's to do with the TV's.

America & Japs have NTSC & Europe,Australia & parts of Asia have PAL.
NTSC stands for National Television Standards Committee & PAL is Phase Alternating Line. Basically NTSC broadcast transmissions are sent using 60 Hertz of electical power as opposed to PAL's 50 Hertz.
Also the difference is Refesh rates. PAL has less frames per second than NTSC but more lines of resolution. PAL 625 NTSC 525. More lines usually means more visual information, which equals better picture quality and resolution. Whenever NTSC is converted to PAL, black bars are often used to compensate for the smaller screen aspect, much like letterboxing for widescreen movies.

though often this it not the case, and they are merely interpolated - this is why most American programs look really crap...aside from being American that is...
