it need one....
old gfx card got there power from the agp or pci slot...
what its saying is....
a power cable that always supplies power.....is always female.....(its so it protects the pins...and the user from shorting across...
male plugs..
the connector on the gfx board is a 4 pin ? male?
connect a cable with a for pin female from the power supply to your gfx card...
i think you mush have done this already.... because if you disconnect it..you will find that the pc will beep...saying 'no gfx card present...

If it occurs when trying to play GFX intensive games such as BF2 or something, then I'd go back to power supply.
Do you have the box it came in, or if not - carefully remove the side panel and look at your power supply - it will say what the power outputs per V are (as in 3.3V, 5V, and 12V) - it should show you the PEAK output, which will add up to 600W when all totalled, as well as how many amps it gives out.
Mine gives a peak output of 26 Amps (240W) @ 12V, which is enough for my 9800 Radeon Pro (was told I'd need 18A+ at least).
Of course, my actual normal output is probabily lower than that, which is where if mine said 18A that i'd come into trouble and have freezes on my comp (it used to happen with my old power supply).
If it isn't - then check your cards drivers page - or the manufacturers forum.

I meant on the side of the actual power supply unit. If you can take a side off of your tower case, then it's usually on a label on the side facing you - listing it's power output.
What exact make/type is the card by the way?
