Gents is there a way of telling xp how i want windows to open and how big
reason is that if i click on word it sometimes comes up full screen or it will come up as a small window on the desk top ... is there a way of controling this ....

Have you switched the computer off and back on again?

Weird bug, sounds like a video card/resolution problem rather than anything else. Spyware can also cause it. Try opening the window, drag the corners to make it full screen, then go up to the top and hit the maximize window. Do not X out of the window, instead go up to file and close. When you open the window again it will be large. Closing on the x doesn't always save the settings where as file close does.

Happens to me all the time. I think Casp's answer is the official one aswell.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt, sometimes it changes when it likes etc.....
