I reinstalled Windows in the end, all my data is on my flaky RAID array, so no worries there.
fecking Intel RAID controllers - on my old nVidia motherboard I could use ordinary desktop disks no problem. With Intel, the disks keep corrupting for no apparent reason. Turns out that the contorller is designed for a 15 second error check on a RAID disk and not the 2 minutes of a desktop disk
I need to replace all of my disks for RAID to work properly
I think a couple of NAS enclosures will take care of my now redundant disks
