I think i would like something similar to that, but with 2GB ram not 1GB, and a SATA hard drive and not an onboard sound card.

Right i just dropped the figure 'around £700' to my dad and he didn't seem to kick up a fuss so i think it's ok to be hovering slightly over, say by £50-100

Only thing he is bothered about is that he wants to charge parts to his company to save VAT or something, so as long as the site's i get them from are reputable.

So if someone can make my life easy and just give me some links to buy hardware parts that'd be great

so i have in mind similar to what said above

preferences
Decent AMD processor
An awesome gaming GFX card (probably nvidia 7900 or something)
2GB ram
SATA HD
SLI motherboard
Not sure about sound cards?
PSU (all standard i guess)
And then i guess i will also need a DVD R..(again standard?)
PC Case?
Probably need an Ethernet Card?

Hopefully totalling £750-800

Bare in mind i don't know much about hardware so most of these brands and models i am basing on novice knowledge

O also, a noob question USB sockets? How do they work exactly when your buying hardware (are they attatched to something like the MOBO?

AMD 3800+ 64
Nvidia 7900
2GB ram
320 GB SATA HD
SLI motherboard
DVD-R
PC Case

Price=£652

Hope this helps and can somebody else check this incase everything I have chosen is crap and won't work

Alternativly swap the processer with this Amd X2 3800+

Totalling £750

My motherboard says it has 10 USB ports. It has four on the back (physically on the motherboard), and pins on the motherboard for 6 more. My case has 2 USB sockets at the front, and my motherboard also came with a USB bracket that goes in one of the PCI slot areas.

My advice, as soon as you put the motherboard in the case, plug in those fiddly little bar stewards that are the USB/power switch/led plugs. Its hell trying to reach behind your graphics card trying to do it lol :)

edit: those specs slaughter put up are good, but try and go for AM2 instead of 939. Although there about the same now, an AM2 board will be better for future upgrades etc. Plus, DDR2 memory, which is faster.

rite, ok i was just under impression that onboard sound cards cause a lot of game related crashes...but perhaps this is an irrational fear

I will probably be purchasing hardware either tomorrow or the day after (providing everything goes as planned i.e. dad doesn't have a change of heart etc etc about price)

Case: Antec P160 £69
Mobo: DFI Lanparty NF590 £175
Athlon 64 3800+ AM2 £99.95
Fortron/Source Powersupply ATX 650W EPS12V, SATA, 24/20pin £78
XFX GeForce 7900GT 256MB DDR3 PCIE Dual DVI £179.99
HDD: 2x Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB SATA2 16MB 7200RPM £55.01 each
RAM: Crucial DDR2 PC5300 2048MB CL5 Kit w/two matched DDR2 PC5300 1024MB CL5 £138

Total £849.96

That'll run Vista Premium ;) The mobo hasn't been released yet, but DFI are considered the best atm. You'll need to use your current monitor, keyboard & mouse and I'm sure a legit copy of XP Pro might be lying around somewhere.....

EDIT: NEC DVD±RW burner, ND-3550A, 16x, Dual, Silver OEM £25.50

Try this mobo: ABIT AN9 32X, nForce 590 SLI, DDR2, Socket-AM2, 2xGbLAN, 2xPCI-Ex16 £135.00 and this processor: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ AM2 £65.01

The processor will overclock easily to 2.6Ghz which will chew through games. On board sound isnt as big a problem these days. The picture below show cpu utilization doing EAX sound effects, the most intensive and you can see it isnt a great overhead. A soundblaster xfi uses more :O

Nice specs the beefy although id personally go for a seasonic psu as they are the most efficient and are quiet too.

The 7900gt draws about 60W max iirc, saw something just a minute ago so you would probably be safe with the 500W PSU even with a possible future SLI setup

Ill look for a system power drain claculator if i can remeber where it is
