Dunno if it's the same with Intel, but if you buy a Retail Athlon chip, it comes with a stock heatsink & fan.

Might be worth confirming this is also the case with Intel chips before you buy the Zalman.

Nope. The stock coolers from Intel is not worth alot. The zalman is much better.

My 6300 @ 2.4 GHz is running at 41 degrees under load. I have the zalman 5900 cooler. It came with mountings for AMD, Intel S478 and S775. Quality piece of kit and runs very quiet

The funny thing is that my Northbridge chip runs hotter at 46 degrees as it is only passivey cooled, time for active cooling I think.

I remember building my first PC... annoying trying to work with the tiny case I have, but I got there by reading the manuals and thoroughly understanding. I think the main problem I had was that I got a water-cooled heatsink with the case, so I had to apply the heatsink compound, so when you see that on heatsinks (black shite on the bottom) don't peel it off, just stick it on, lol

Although... when you come to a motherboard that doesn't have a manual and you try to figure out where the power wires etc go for an old gigabyte motherboard... your happy you have the internet! :D

Other than that ASUS motherboard... bad memories of those. ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe, damn I hate that board...

Shit one. I'm still using my AMD stock cooler - it's pretty good.

If he does. It retails at around £40. Get the Artic Freezer Pro 64. Just as good but half the price.
