Expect a lot of pain
See if you can boot safe mode, and then try a system restore.
If not, just plan on booting from the CD you have and trying a repair.

Hmmm, the only time I managed to rescue sommert from a lappy drive was removing it from teh laptop and connecting it to my desktop pc with an ide converter.. they cost about 5 or 10 quid as i recall.

Mate not sure if you solved this, but for future reference
hit F8 while the pc is booting, you will get a boot menu, Select "Last known Good configuration"
This will solve the problem
(it has in every case i have seen of this)

I took the long and painful route to backup my PC when I had a similar problem... it was "Download Knoppix" and boot from CD, then load SSH and zip the files needed... then send them via SSH using something like psftp or winscp... painful... - -;;
