I have my puter plugged into my Sony 5.1 amplifier. It was made for cinema but does bealt out quite a good tune. I picked mine up for £220 about 4 years ago and im sure there are cheaper options out there for about £100.

You on board sound would be good enough ( Maybe ) but you will need an amp to drive the speakers properly.

Looking around it does seem the old your get what you pay for adage applies. Cheap lower quality and wattage per speaker. You might want to check out what currys and the like have.

avoid tiny speakers like plauge, you want big as possible = best sound

and for gawds sake don't just buy them without listening to them first...

but yeah, a beastly cinema kit would be fine, but you'd need to have your spdif out, so you would probs need a sound card. but nothing too swanky

not necessarily
I have the Bose AM15's and they sound amazing ! better than any other large speaker i have ever heard.

Also if your wanting a nice party machine put windows media centre on, has a special mode just for partys, the rest of the computer can be locked out and only songs can be played, i know theres proberly a program to do this, but just a thought :)

This is theretical (As I don't have a sound card). If it's possible, plug the left and right audio leads to an amp, with speakers. Or if not an amp, anything that has a plug in for the left and right audio leads. Tis how I would go about it......I used to plug my Playstation into the video player...using the leads. Had the vido player on, the T.V switched to the video player channel, so I could see the Game. And I had two left and right audio leads from the video to an 80's amp with huge speakers. Basically I made a home entertainment system when I was 10.
