Is there a (free) HDD partitioning tool that will partition without formatting? - windows is borked and i dont want to have to send everything back to my old computer and back again for the reinstall.

It will let you make a partition in free space on the drive.
What is your objective though bilbo? You may run into problems with two installs of windows on the same drive.

its just to store files while i reinstall windows, saves having to use the other computer for storage via network (which is full and messy)
unless i can repair windows?

Should work fine, assuming windows is in a good enough state to actually install the software. BTW you'll have to format the partition once you've made it, but partition magic does all that.

with PM you will need to shrink the existing partition first usually.
You could reinstall Windows into a different directory instead.
Parallel install details are here
If doing that I would backup/rename your Documents&Settings folders first.

repartitioned drive, but it turns out a reinstall shouldn't be necessary (see my other thread)
