Post subject: I have a spare PC. What should I do with it?  Posted: Fri Jul 21, 2006 9:44 pm |

Ive got a spare PC, too old to be sold for any money. Its got a 1.1GHz processor and 512mb of ram. (although im not sure maybe 256  )
Also has a DX7 GFX card. Hard drive is 50Gb.
ATM its controlled by remote desktop from my PC. However, my brothers got a spare CRT that I can have, although I was thinking of having dual monitors on my PC 
I was thinking I could do that home-made TIVO thing, or maybe turn it into some server. Only got a 1Mbps line though so anything too intensive wouldnt work.
I might just get it to fold: http://folding.stanford.edu/
But thats boring. I like the TIVO idea, but it would probably involve me spending lots of money on stuff. We do have a old(ish) analogue tv card somewhere, but it can also act as a capture card aswell.
Anyway, any ideas?

just have it set up on the fourm so you can read while you
are dead playing css. saves on the alt/tab
think swifty should do the same as he spends most of his time on css dead

You could stick a bunch of disk in it and use it for serving files or... even better... use it to learn linux and eventually make a safe secure file server.

I was thinking about putting all my DVD's on there and then we can watch them all round the house
I've messed around with linux before, but tbh I have no idea what I'm doing. I got it all installed (I have several Ubuntu disks), but I could never figure out how to install new stuff and drivers 
Any dist you'd recommend for a n00b like me? Ubuntu is pretty user freindly, but I just need a big n00bs guide for it

make it a dual boot linux and windows - use windows when you are playing CSS to keep MSN and the forum (and ogame) up, and linux when you're trying to learn how to use it
then you can use linux for everything, and uninstall windows..
also, make a FAT partition so you can access teh pron from both OSs.
