Post subject:  Computer Keeps Freezing

So i'll be playing counterstrike, then all of a sudden my whole computer will freeze and the only thing i can do is turn the power on and off. mike told me to turn off the automatic restart(i think) and a blue screen should appear next time it crashes but it didnt. so i need help in how to find the source of the problem, so if anyone knows of programs that can check for me that would be a great help :D :D

thanks sam

if you need any specs about my pc just ask

the only thing that stands out to me is the unmatched pair of memory.

But that does not usualy cause a problem. With the issue being recent, im assuming, i would suggest you have some how corrupted some software, either your OS or CSS.

Also i noticed ur agp apeture size is 512mb and im guessing your 6600 has only 128mb or maybe even 256mb, either way you should turn it down to match for better performance/reliablity.

Best bet would be to reinstall HL2 and CSS.

Does it happen on any other games or programs?

I have been getting this also while playing CSS, only ever happens while playing it.
DC, COD2, WoW etc is fine. (although my sound mucks up on DC)

So I'm sure this must be a problem with CSS, I'v had a complete system restore and will be installing CSS tonight.
Hopefully this will fix it, as I said it sounds a lot like my problem so it is something to do with CSS.

Perhaps the files etc have just recieved errors/been corrupted a bit over time (I'v had my css installed since last september, with no re-installs)

run memtest86.iso

download it and burn as disc image runs automatically at boot

Tell me, does the sound loop when it freezes? If it does you have the infamous "sound looping crash". Unfortunately, no-one knows how to fix it.

The extreme Blue Screen will only appear in dire situations...not what seems to be a simple crash.

so ive had css installed since christmas, and my computer got updated with the nvidia 6600 and more RAM, and other things i dont remeber in february(ish). but everything has worked fine up till like last week when its started 2 freeze when playing css. when it freezes the only solution i have found is turning my pc on and off, but when i do this sometimes the computer will boot up but the monitor will say no signal, then turn it all off and on and it works fine. :? :?

that to me now sounds like the graphics card... since that displays the image to the monitor...no signal detected..

maybe your card is overheating?

check the fan on it if it has one, check the temperatures..

i do it like this

Image

desktop, properties, gpu top right corner

failing that might be able to check in the bios
