im thinking of upgrading my 3700 to a 4800x2, but i have heard there are problems on dual core, easily fixed but problems.

do i need dual core drivers?

whats this mshotfix for dual core?

and i have been told to do this to get cs:s running smooth?

Quote:
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Right-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro
l\Session Manager, point to New, and then click Key.
3. Type Throttle for the new key name.
4. Right-click Throttle, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
5. Type PerfEnablePackageIdle for the value name.
6. Right-click PerfEnablePackageIdle, and then click Modify.
7. In the Value data box, type 0. Make sure that Hexadecimal is selected in the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, and then click OK.
Note You can type 1 in the Value data box to enable the new performance state policy behavior.
8. Quit Registry Editor.

Dual Core is win

do i need dual core drivers?
No, Windows handles this itself. Yet AMD have an "AMD Dual Core Optimizer", dunno if its works well.

Just got an AM2 4800 dual core with 2 Gigs RAM, most - if not all - modern games work ok but some older ones won't.

For example :

Dangerous Waters blank screen
Falcon 4.0 Allied Force random CTD
System Shock 2 only runs with 1 cpu disabled
Operation Flashpoint regular CTD after 20mins

Newer games like BF2, CoD2, Far Cry, LOMAC, HL2, LFS work no problemo

Some of the fixes work, some don't. Got SS2 running ater a forum search elsewhere, but nothing has given me any relief as regards OpFlash so I've binned it in the hope that Armed Assault will work ok when it's released. Tried Memtest just in case it's a RAM issue, but all fine there. Might be my 7950 card, I just don't know. Easier to uninstall than investigate, especialy when I can always boot up my old PC for the 'retro-gaming' moments.

If you can live without the older games, get upgrading. Newer titles seem to run sweet ( except DW, but that's built on an old engine anyway)

Oh, and DC still works fine.

:D

Surely the way forward now is Intel Conroe - If I had to upgrade mobo as well as CPU then it woudl be Conroe all the way - they can clock over 3 Ghz on Air !!

I currently have a AMD 4000+ so need for upgrade just yet - but when it is it will be Conroe - or maybe wait a little longer for Quad Core.(just to be greedy)
