i know this is a while away.
BUT
Say if i saved for the gefore 8800 (or wateva it will be, bound to use similar coding, lol) if i got one would i HAVE to buy vista to use the thing?
i know dx10, or i have been told dx10 is only for vista so does that mean all dx10 gpus will only work with vista? Or will they just work at dx9 level on xp?

Games will have backwards compatability support for DX9 for a while, otherwise manufacturers would be losing alot of customers who cant afford vista.
Im sure there will be some version of DX10 that will run on XP, but it probably wont be as optimised as if it was running on a 64-bit system or something.
HL2 supports (or more, is playable) in DX7 remember

Though some games will be DX10 only ie Halo2 for PC, this means you will have to purchase Vista to play it. Just the usual microsoft heavy handed strategy.

Lets say, you buy a card with Directx 10. You will be able to run Directx 9 games on both Vista and XP. But if you want to run a Directx 10 game, you MUST(!!!) run vista.
This is because of the way Vista is build, thus they cant make a XP version of DirectX10. So dont hold your breath.

"Games will have backwards compatability support for DX9 for a while" If this games are DirectX 10 games, then its false.
Aswell there is NO way that there will be a DX10 version that will run on XP. Its as simple as that.

surely though, the games will be able to run in DX9? Presumably this would be slightly more difficult than say running HL2 in DX7 or 8, but the game companies couldn't just shut off most of their market?

7900 covers DX10 anyway so you should be ok if you got that

I'm sure many people will be able to get Vista easily enough *cough*. It's just the gfx card that everyone is confused about, as slayer said though, my next card i'll be getting is a 7900GT, Around 200 quid now, by the time Vista comes out..How much do you guys think they will cost?

Well, my presumptions have been proven wrong. Im just saying, you can have a DX9 game and run it on a DX8 machine (not all games obviously), so I don't think game develeopers will IMEDIATELY cut out quite a lot of the gaming population by making games DX10 exclusive. Not that all developers are that nice of course.
I mean, HALO 2, an xbox game, not playable on XP just because you need DX10 just seems a bit of a con to buy (in the most liberal sense of the word) Vista.
