I am having the exact same problems!

I myself have been getting terrible packet loss. So phoned NTL numerous times. Already had one engineer out, did jack shit! Got another booked for monday and im told by NTL they WILL sort it!
So what did I get for my moaning
4MB half price for the next three months, and today they gave me this month free as well for the bother they have caused.
Their tech support is useless, I've tried to explain several times its an intermitant fault, but they wont listen and when the run the diag on my modem it reports as fine (because sods law is it will always work when they look)
They told me
a) is their fault...sorry blah blah
b) its your computer (ntl support guy even said he could access my computer THROUGH my router....wooow hes a good hacker)
c) its my router (cant be that changed it twice now)
so my advice ring up and moan like a biatch and you will get somewhere....o I should mention a couple of things. Firstly dont like paying for those crappy 0871 and 0845 numbers? Well here is a present.
01256 751046 (customer services, just like calling a house phone) or
0800 052 9403 (customer RELATIONS number, dont press anything when it says select and option, and you will get through to customer services)
Lastly check this out. This is probably why you are seeing terrible speeds and bad packet loss.
