Post subject:  computer fuses

yesterday i got a new PSU for my computer (600w) but when i put it in and turned it on it blew the fuse in the plug. the fuse was a 5w but should it be more than that or should it be less or a 5 in there?

mine at the moment is a 350w and my computer is back up and running using that PSU but would like to get my 600w PSU back in and working so i can do these other jobs i have to do...

under ohms law the current draw of a 600w device on a 250v mains line is going to max out at 2.4A

I(amps) = p (watts)/ V (volts)

For it to blow a 5A fuse on install smacks of internal short in the PSU itself.

Take it back.

Putting a higher fuse than 5A is going to cause a fire hazard as the correct fuse should be fitted for your own safety, and slapping a 13A fuse in there is going to increase the chance of the PSU blowing something more expensive in your PC before it whacks the fuse out.

Fuses are there for your protection and the protection of the equipment they serve. Substitute a higher rated fuse at your peril.

Take the PSU back and get it changed.

ok thanks... theres another 5a fuse in there now... (the fuse that blew was over 2 years old :? so i dont know if that had any effect on it...)

any suggestions on a PSU since i am sending this one back? my previous (350w) wasnt enough to power my computer and required me to restart to get my second hard drive working... but i could make do with it... on monday my new graphics card is coming (see link below)

http://forum.gamecommunity.co.uk:8080/v ... hp?t=35119

which will take even more power... hence y i have the 600w one.

i got this one from aria (link below)
htttp://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=22653

so any ideas? want to spend up to £30 on one... so can b more powerfull

the psu is the most important compenent in your pc quality wise...if it goes, everything else can go....you want quality not power...and £20 != quality...

antec or enermax....

should also point out that my ram will be upgraded to 2gb in the near future if that would have any effect on power?
