for some reason i get this message or similar when i visit a website that requires flash player

Sends me to htttp://www.adobe.com/shockwave/downloa ... kwaveFlash

and sure enough i install the activeX controller, and the little vid plays to confirm it's sucessfully installed, but yet when i try to view the videos you guys post on the forums they dont work. Suspect it may be something to do with my java console?

maybe your firewall is blocking them, especially if it is set to Defcon1 :?
