Post subject:  moving to 8mb (but not getting full speed?)

well we recently upgraded the package with BT from a 2mb to an 8mb connection with unlimited useage cap

we also now have a broadband phone which has an 05 number for cheaper / free calls and a Router/Hub that the new telephone has to connect into

we had the hub in for about 4 days or so now

the connection speed is recognised as '8mb' on my old router when it's plugged in (does not say on my new Hub when internet connects but i assume its 8mb)

but when i run the desktop help tool that came with BT install cd, the speed test says between 2mb and 3mb...and i've ran this over the course of about 5 days or so with not much improvement..

so whats going on?

in my local area they JUST stuck up new telephone lines capable of the new speeds, why aren't i able to get the full speed on the speed test?

edit: tried downloading a 60mb file, its going at 780 kbps - so that does resemble the actual speeds promised... so what does this indicate?

Check at adslguide.org
But I get about 6 here on a 8Mb line, to be fair I was told because of location that I might only get upto 4 when I signed up.

I asked for 8 and got 8 (actually 7.5 theroetical max due to ip overheads).

The speed depends on line length to the exchange and twisted pair quality.

But TBH ask yourself this, does it work, and if so whats the big deal. Worst case scenario is that you get interleaved bunged on your line because the line quality is shody so be thankful for what you got :)
