what way is the headphones connected, is it just a normal stereo connection? and do you have your sound options set to stereo as well or is it set to surround, which in that case you will be missing some audio channels on the headphones

I'd say this is most likely.

1. Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices
2. Click on Volume tab and under Speaker Settings section click Advanced
3. Make sure the speaker setup is set to stereo headphones in the Speakers Tab and that Hardware Acceleration is up full on the Performance tab.

Also, go back to the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties window and check your output device if you have more that one audio device, i.e. onboard audio and an Audigy card...

1. Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices
2. Click on Audio tab and check that the devices are set to the correct device that you use.
3. Click on Vice tab and do the same.

Good luck.
