Thats VSYNC.
You often dont see the difference from having a FPS higher then your screen refresh rate.

But can reduce FPS of some games by 50%. :|

Of course enabling tripple buffering may help you with this, it really depends on the game.

I've noticed tearing to be noticeable in games such as Doom III, Quake IV, Prey and F.E.A.R, which seem to share a similar engine?

And you also don't really get a better picture with more FPS then the refreshrate (Hz) of your monitor. Meaning you won't notice.

its more noticble when turning fast, you often see lines accross the screen with v-sync off as its drawing two different images

ahahahahahahaha!

Aye, FEAR was where I first really noticed the difference.......any games where the framerate may suddenly drop/fluctuate...ie high end games...is where its useful, even though it does sap performance a little

thats what vsync does, you run at your monitors refresh rate (60hz) but if your comp cant do 60fps then it will force it to run at half your refresh rate (30hz), this means one frame every two refreshes.

shearing is caused by the frame rate not being divisable by the refresh rate of the screen.

imo i turn it off, cos my eyes dont mind a small amount of shearing (if it gets too bad i turn it on) wereas an instant halfing of frame is noticable.

badly explained i know but im on the phone
