I got a laptop, an old one too. IT's a P3 1000MHz and 256MB RAM. I've disabled aload of stuff at startup, gona run a virus scan, do some spyware checks and defrag it.

got any idea what else I should do to it? Registry cleanup etc? If so, recommend some programs please. :)

I'mma use so far:

AGV Free - Virus Scanning
Spybot Search and Destroy - Spyware checker. :P
Diskeeper 11 - Defragger.

And basically unload alot of startup programs that aren't required.

CCleaner for all your registery an other such needs.

Laptop sounds fine - as long as the battery is good for a few hours.

Icon doesn't appear with 11 apparently it's "transparent" and apparently, basically defrags your comp while using it to prevent fragmentation while using your comp. >.>

I'll probs disable it anyways. XDXD

Best way to make it run fast again is to format it :D..

- Other than that, after uninstalling stuff, look around for folders that didn't delete when you uninstalled them.

- Run crap cleaner (google it)

- Make sure nothing loads at startup..only thing that loads on my startup is SetPoint (for my mouse to work in Ventrilo) and AVG (anti-virus)..

- Get icons off the desktop (this slows down loading time obviously), and also if your REALLY keen, make sure the wallpaper is a small file and not like 5mb :P.

Perhaps increase Pagefile up a few GB's :P..

the rest has been said.

Disable startup sound, as this also take a while to load.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also download this (microsoft bootvis, used to optimise boot times):
Code:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/BootVis.shtml

Follow this:
Quote:
1. Download and install 'BootVis'

2. Go to 'Start > Program Files > Microsoft BootVis > BootVis'

3. When the program loads go to 'Trace > Select Next Boot and Driver Trace'

4. When the 'Trace Repetitions' screen appears, click 'Ok' and reboot the machine.

5. After rebooting 'BootVis' will appear, click on 'Trace > Optimize System' Reboot your machine.

6. Upon rebooting your machine a screen will appear - Optimizing System box, be patient the operation may take a couple of minutes, when done your machines boot time has been optimized.

Cut about 8 seconds from mine :D
