I am considering building a computer and have little knowledge of what to do, especially ensuring componets do not conflict etc.

anyone know a site / books / resource where I can learn....

TBH Things like components and such dont tend to suffer from many conflicts nowadays I've found.
A fair few people on here could probably advise you on wether the hardware is compatible with each other, which is you only worry.
As for actually sticking one together its not that bad a job to do, if your patient, most stuff tends to be pretty obvious, as long as you read the component manual on where to put it.

i reckon what you do mate, is post here how much you have and challenge the more geeky ones amongst us to build spec your dream machine - hell, if you offer them #50 plus p&p i'm sure they'll snap at your heals to build it for you.....

if you decide to build yourself (or #50's too cheap for the loadsamonies) using the winning system you'll be certain it wont conflict and you'll have someone to turn to if you have problems building.

i know very little about current pc's but from reading here i'm gonna spec you:

a PCIe motherboard with a decent FSB, say 1G: e6600 compatible
an e6600 core2duo plus a decent heatsink
2gb whatever ram the motherboard takes (Fdimm or sommat seems to be current standard)
a decent gfx card (pcie) 512mb the 1950gtx PCIe seems a bargain
an antec psu to avoid 8-ball spam at least 500w with decent cooler
a decent case:

you get what you pay for, but only once the 'launch premium' has been taken into account. so buy last years top end stuff and it's hopefully gonna be better than bying this years mid end.

just my oar.

I found when building mine that if this bit plugs into that bit then its probably supposed to.

the mobo, case and CPU will all come with relatively good instructions, but something like this should fill in the gaps.

Good luck - and remember - get Antec :)

I really want to do it myself....but would like help choosing the componets....quickly knocked this one up

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)
LiteON LH-20A1P-487C 20x DVD±RW x12 Ram Dual Layer DVD-Writer
Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case
Creative X-Fi Xtreme Audio 7.1 Soundcard - OEM
Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g)
Noctua NH-U12F (Socket LGA775/754/939/940/AM2) Heatsink
Samsung SpinPoint T HD501LJ 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM
BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC2 320MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)***** i hate choosing GFX cards
DFI Infinity 975X (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard]
Antec TruePower Trio 550W PSU
Samsung SM-226BW 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor - 2ms response
I assume the above parts would come with the necessary cables, I have keyboard, mouse and ADSL external modem.

OS ? ~ dont know which to get I assume VISTA but not sure which one.

The above except OS costs around £ 1000.00 ish inc VAT ~ not bad tbh....

comments anyone...
