You will need to bridge your lans together i think.

Explain more, do you mean one of you hosts the game (server), or both connecting to an external game server?
Are the wireless lans in the same building, do they have the same ISP, can you ping the others wirless routers etc?
More info please...

We're trying to play Civ4 using a direct host (because gamespy won't work). he's on a LAN at his house, and i'm on a different one at mine. When we try to connect it says the host has timed out.

well if you want to play over the LAN, you need to be on the same LAN....

Not necessarilly
If its the game that desires true lan then youwould need to do a vpn (which is an arse to set up )
More likley is the routers at either end need to be configured to 'port forward' for the correct ports that the game runs on

If you want to play via a vpn get a program like hamachi.
Its a good solution and its very easy to use.

doesnt that just count as playing on the internet???
my understanding of a "LAN" is two computers hooked up to a server, and playing by connecting directly to each other....?
two seperate LANs, both hooked up to the internet, is just internet gaming.....no??
Is there some techy thing i'm missing?? (i'm nearly sure there is )
enlighten me please

LAN : computers conneted together using the same physical network. (ie your home network, your office network etc)
VPN Tunneling : secret ip hax, joins two seperate networks together as one using public networks (the internet) as transit. PS VPN = VIRTUAL Private Network.
Server : indicates a seperate computer as the game server, when we talk about Lan gaming it could be that if there are two computers playing one of them will act as the server and one will be the client.
Internet gaming : any number of 'networks' (ie computers behind home/work routers) connect to a game server seperate of all the networks.
Lan gaming, any number of computers on the same network (be it physical or vpn) connecting to a server be it game/host or dedicated.
