Ok i have a laptop with xp on and want to give it a try with ubuntu. offcourse being at the end of the month and im fresh out of cds - i did wonder if there where a relative easy way to make a dualboot without burning a cd or have a bunch of you need to "insert linux commands here".

Cheers

If you're just gonna try it out, I'd recommend using VMWare as you can just
delete the VMware file and it's all gone afterwards! Great for when you feck it up :D

Then you just use an ISO file, mounted as a CD-drive to install it.

ive built an ubuntu virtual pc at work using Virtual PC 2007

easy to do and i probably could send you the virtual hard drive on disk.

You just have to have enough spare ram on the host system, it runs fine on mine with 256Mb

If the laptop has a single partition this may be shrunk using qtparted. This was always part of older releases on the live cd and probably still is. Remember to defrag windows first though. I have done this with out issue but if something goes wrong like a power cut you could lose windows. Once the partition is shrunk you could install Ubuntu in the free space, allow space for a swap partition and the new OS 3GB+ maybe.

I am not saying go and do this I'm just saying its possible. Play with he live cd and with vmware first maybe to get used to it.

I believe there is an issue with acer laptops Bios and linux too.

Edit: yeah just seen the bit about no cds. Suggest you buy some.
