I've got an old laptop which I use from time to time, trouble is, its about 5+ years old now, and only has a 500ish mHz processor.

I was wondering if it would run any better on linux rather than windows xp.

And if so, which version?

Thanks,

Seric

stick xubuntu on there, its ubuntu with a slightly stripped down gui, so runs very well on slow machines, whilst keeping the functionality of ubuntu. you can either download it here http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/gutsy/release/ or you if you already have an ubuntu disk, use that and apt-get xubuntu-desktop

[edit] that or compile gentoo

If you want linux to fly you could be brave and run a text-only version 8)

I have a FreeBSD machine which I have been learning UNIX on and do everything via the command line :)

Slappeh can go on at great length about selecting the bits that you need, then recompiling the kernel for a much more efficient system :) Sounds like you're going to need it...
