just had virgin cable fitted and i cant get the router to work from the cat 45 and the usb at the same time .... i managed this with the bt router ......
basically i have one modem from virgin and 3 computers ... my dads mine and a crap laptop
my dads computer must be connected at all times [ as hes paying ] and i wanna use the connection for lappy and desktop ... can u advise what to do to get all these running i know i can go get a wireless router , adsl router or a hub etc but im only here for a couple months and dont wanna payout ... tight git and that :smile:

is your dads connected via a usb connection?

how many rj45 connections does ya router have?

sorry cat 45 cable .... rj 45
the modem has 1 x rj45 & 1 x usb
i can get them working independently but not together

sounds like it just autoselects... and you cant use both..

its not a cable router..but you should just be able to connect to your ether port and should be ok..
check with slaps anyway....

as far as a know you cant just plug a new cable modem on as the mac address is bonded to the user account
yeah with ntl you cant use usb / either at the same time as that would be giving you 2 ips
because your being a cheap bastard why not enable connection sharing ?

I thought of that but if your only got one network card in each computer, won't that cause problems..

I suppose Modem USB to PC1 USB then PC1 RJ45 (via twisted pair) to PC2 RJ45. Would a 10/100 switched hub help?

you can still do it with 1 network interface its just not as secure

dads a bit of a stickler and he wants to be able to use his connection when he wants to
and he wont want to boot up another computer so he can use his ............
he also dont want his computer runing all the time
im off to pc world to get a router with at least 2 ports
