Everyone says that Linux is better than windoze because it less of a resource hog and so on. My crappy old laptop has only 32mb of ram and fairly happily runs Windows 98 with it's essentially easy to use interface. However, if I want to install Linux on the laptop, I can't put anything on there that is usable as Windoze, what gives? This isn't a stab at Linux, just can't work it out why I can't put something quicker than what is on there and still have the same user friendliness and usability. |

Recent advances in the GUI add-ons require more power. Command-line linux however, should see your laptop fly, but that would be true of windows (although not server 2008's command-line mode I suspect). Bear in mind that the GUI of Ubuntu is 10 years more advanced than Windoze 98's and has been written in the main for contemporary hardware. |

choose fwm or something simialar and it wil be fast, but like beef said mosts distro`s that are easy to use are aimed at modern hardware |

I'm using Awesome at the mo and it runs pretty snazzily. Might need a bit of configuring, but it's just a window manager rather than a full fledged desktop environment so it should run lighter. |
