Has anyone running Vista got the Huffyuv codec installed? Does it run ok? How did you install it? Readme says to right click the .exe and select install - but there is no such option for me.

Help appreciated.

Sure. It is a good and reliable, free, lossless codec for the use of frapped capture video compression. I like to tinker about with Adobe Premiere, but have never been able to compress the end product enough to put them out for download. If you know of any other good lossless codecs (that work with Vista), I'd be interested to know of it.

how does the file size compare, if you were to render as quicktime and use the H.264 codec?

you could try the divx codec too

post your prem pro project settings for rendering, as im curious

i myself prefer to work with sony vegas as i think its easier to use
i also have the luxury of using the wmv codec which creates files almost 50% smaller than avi
at no real loss of quality

Well, before even getting the footage into Prem Pro, I am trying to compress it in VirtualDub.

I have tried various sizes: 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x960 in PP to match capture size.

Divx 6.8.4 doesn't seem to work in either program at the moment. It crashes VD, and produces a corrupt avi out of PP. I've had it working, but it seems to be broken now. :( Maybe I should go back to 6.8.3, as I updated recently, and maybe that was it. But at the end of the day, I am baffled with it, as i have known it to be a fairly reliable codec. Maybe I should look at reinstalling this (?)

A 12 sec clip, at 1280x960 will go through VD fine using the Cinepak Radius codec. Quality is very good, and the size reduces by 50% (131mb - 56.2mb). But that is too big.

H.264 ...isn't that for Mac? And payware? Anyway, I don't think I want to make a Quicktime vid.

Not sure what to do ....need direction. :|

let prem do the compression, otherwise you'll lose the quality and i would have thought that
the xvid codec was an option (i'm under the impression its bundled with vdub :? )

if not, you'll find it here > http://www.free-codecs.com/Koepi_XviD_download.htm

shame about the divx codec :(

try here for some pointers > http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/video_workshop/

i have prem myself, but i dont like it because of the file sizes it creates and the UI is so crap
have you considered using Vegas?

if i could persuade you to come over to the dark side, i have plenty of tuts for you to work with
and it will help in reducing those incredible file sizes

good luck anyway

Hey thanks Strangelove, you've been very helpful.

I think I have found the problem, and I believe that to be that PP does not like X codecs (divx/xvid). Seems to be 1000s online with same problem. I guess that is why I had been directed to Huffyuv. Unfortunately that doesn't work either.

Solution for me is to render at no compression out of PP, then slip it through VirtualDub.

I got rid of Divx, and installed Xvid. Xvid seems to do a better job than Divx, so I am happy with this scenario.

At least, I'll try it. Thanks again.

8) :thumbl:

i hope you give the other option a try  :o7:

i'll try PP again to render a vid so i can get used to it and see what options are available

well i tried it

and did a comparison test between PP and SV

the file used was 729mb frap file shrunk down to 24.9 using these

render settings: 1280*720 6000kbps using the divx 6.4.8 codec (2 logical cpu's)

the results

1. Premiere Pro CS3

2. Vegas Pro 8.0

:stumble:

edit: They didn't work, but now they do. :? I'm still a noob.

Right, well that is what I am getting in PP: quilting and scaling, exactly as you have here. PP just doesn't like X codecs.

However, avoid X codecs and PP is fine. I had planned to render uncompressed out of PP, then compress and crop with VD using Xvid, which got that 12 sec clip down to 7mb.

.
it appears to be counter productive using PP, while its a great program,
it just doesnt do you any favours, it lacks a lot codecs
and the ability to just do a basic task (the gui is awful)

 come over to the dark side and give a vegas a try,
honestly you'll thank me for it

and that goes for Ezer too!
