Post subject:  external conflict

my parents external harddrive has for some reason stopped showing up as a external drive, it doesnt show up at all. when it was plugged into there computer it came up as C drive (Same as the boot drive) so figured there was a conflict. it wont let us change the letter nor can we change the boot drive to D or some other letter to change it later.

when plugged into my computer it doesnt show up unless i "manage" my harddrives... or look in device manager... under "manage" it shows up as unallocated space. so has it screwed up? :?

any ideas on how to solve this?

Long as it isn't a Maxtor it could just be a conflict. What make is it?

is there any other buttons on the drive apart from the on swtch?

the first thing i would do is try another cable, perhaps the printer cable (well mine is the bloody same  )

and look at the contacts too, as you stated, you can see the drive on your pc in device manager

has the thing been dropped or knocked?

teh cable is the same as the one for my external which i will try this afternoon when i get home from college... but it hasnt been unplugged from the computer since we got it (may be the problem) so cant see the contacts getting stuffed by being left plugged in.

we've had it a few months now and no problems... its only been the last week that its started doing this (my parents pc at the time was screwed... boot drive was D: and not C: so external went to C: and is now conflicting... yet i cant change it)
