Reading Data from a harddrive that vista wont read unless I format it First.

why wont it read it - do you know - ie ext3 filesystem ?

Not really sure, Picks up the hdd but when i try and open it vista just says you must format first..., is it just silly vista? think i'll install XP tbh

Is this a disk out of your old PC? Could be corruption, but I'd try it in an XP box first....

personally id download knoppix and mount it and see what i could see before letting windows try and "fix" it

if it's a readable NTFS/FAT volume, vista should show it... assuming it's not been encrypted on the previous machine. More likely your drive is fooked
