after i installed the display driver - on boot - BSOD... so i powered off and re-started.... it loaded windows as normal without drivers...so i tried to update to latest drivers - part way through installing - black screen with a _ at the top left

i have an nvidia 9500gt

kept doing the same thing .. so had to do system restore...fine atm...

the way i tried to install new drivers was

I uninstalled display driver... via add/remove

but i left Physx driver and Tune up installed and then on restart tried to install new driver from nvidia site...

- is that why?? should i have uinstalled those tune up and physx drivers also?

You're meant to get that black screen during the installation, it can take up to 20 minutes to install.

With nvidia shite, install it but do a manual reboot. Disable the other crap in startup of msconfig and THEN reboot. 8800gtx here.

Then when u update, it updates the other comonents but still doesn't load them.

No, no I was not. Having recently installed Vista /spits, I've had to install the driver from scratch and at one point (or 4 in the case of Quad SLi), the screen goes black with a cursor. I will examine your lack of faith in detail later....
