My sister has a problem with her PC, I'm supposed to be takin a look at it tomorrow.

It comes up with an error stating "windows did not shut down correctly last time" & then
continually loops from there

Basically its not loading windows (XP) apparently it won't start in safe mode any ideas?

she probably either had a powercut... or pressed power button / not shutting down pc properly... as the message indicates

do you have system restore on - it usually says after a few attempts, last known good configuration...

if its XP .. and u can't fix it from there then it looks like a reinstall job - try and save hdd contents by plugging it in elsewhere and copying it before formatting it.....

Vista has like an option to 'rescue' it - i've done that to people's pc's before when they havent turned it off properly.

rofl! i did it to my laptop within maybe 2-3 hours of having it... sitting playing unreal tournament and the dam game crashes, playing a non stop loop of one of the guns firing, couldn't do anything, couldnt even turn the bloody volume down or mute it... in the end, held the power button and killed windows explorer. wooops

thank toshiba for recovery discs

took the hard drive out an connected it to my PC in the hope that I could retrieve her family photo's etc, the HD showed up in my computer no problem but came with the message " this drive is not formatted do you want to format it now", I press "no" & won't let me get any further.
I took the jumper off the HD to make it a slave, should I have put the jumper in another position?
Any ideas or has she lost the contents of the HD?

Install linux on a partition of your HDD, then connect that drive again - boot into linux and then explore to your hearts content...

^ what he said but easier - download a linux boot cd - you wont even have to install
ubuntu / knoppix will do what you want
to make it even easier you might want another pc on the lan / somewhere on the net to send to before you do this - even a account on a web uploader and then upload from firefox in the linux session
if you get stuck mate give us a shout

Tried any of these? http://freepctech.com/pc/002/files010.shtml

I've also found this disk invaluable when I've had problems loading windows. http://www.tinyempire.com/notes/ntldrismissing.htm It has saved me having to do a re-install of windows many times.
