quick update.

I just tried to stick in a windows boot disc

it got as far as loading stuff (first 2-3 minutes of stuff it usually does)

then without any input at all... same BSOD... so that suggests to me its hardware..

erm managed to unlock case.... ran memtest from ubuntu boot disc and it didn't report any memory errors......if memtest is reporting no errors is it pointless to reseat ram?

I did notice that from the boot menu.... it said something like "system does not support installed processor" - is this a sign of a problem with processor??

Corrupt driver, won't it go into safe mode?

virtually sorted it now - wouldnt load in safe mode no...

had to take it to a technician who charged £40 to get it working
he said he had to use command lines in recovery console to repair it...

Its back working at home...
also of the opinion that a virus (worm) modified some system drivers / files that were causing the bsod.... but impossible to be sure...
