as with keeping with tradition, I am late to this windows 7 party. while I have been impressed with some aspects on the OS, the one thing that's really letting the side down is the shutdown time. The fastest recorded bootdown from hitting the shutdown tab is 1min 30secs the longest being well over the 3 minute mark all i have installed atm are nividia mobo & graphics drivers, creative sound drivers Kaspersky internet security opera browser I am aware of the reg hack to decrease the time, but it doesn't really work for me. I have tried with Kaspersky uninstalled. Tried different nvidia drivers still it hangs its tits off oh i havent ran ms update yet (SP 1 out on the 22nd) fire away with any questions.... tried all of the tricks that link mentioned, this is the badger that worked Quote: Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe). Change the data value of the ClearPageFileAtShutdown value in the following registry key to a value of0 : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management If the value does not exist, add the following value: Value Name: ClearPageFileAtShutdown Value Type: REG_DWORD Value: 0 it worked so well i didnt have time to set the stopwatch |

including the following reg hack Quote: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control WaitToKillServiceTimeout REG_SZ 2000 shutdown is less than 10 seconds, it really is quick but...... just before i typed this reply, i thought i would just time it again it took ages, closer inspection revealed the ClearPageFileAtShutdown reg key changed back to 1 |

i understand why you'd want it to boot up fast, but why does it matter how long it takes to shut down? hit shutdown.. walk away. done. my pc varies from 10-15 seconds to a few minutes to shutdown on win7, but it seems to depend on what ive had running during the time its been switched on. never been a problem for me though also, keep in mind, if you've only recently upgraded, good chance its installing updates while shutting down. |

I was always told of the speed difference between xp sp3 and w7 the latter often being touted as the quickest so you can imagine the horror at the 3 minute shutdown the boot up time isn't such an issue, within reason (xp still quicker though ) |
