i'd be inclined to do a full memory check..overnight.......also try doing a system file check from an admin dos box... sfc /scanow just to check you aint got any corrupt files...

Is that the same as using the error checking tool in the harddrive properties (i.e same place as defrg)?

no updates have been carried out recently, pc was running like a sack of crap on tuesday
night tho, so i did the error checking on both HD's last night (had to watch telly with the
missus while pc did the biz  )

Yes.

Also:

1. Clean your out your temp folder manually then run file cleaner and registry cleaner on these two apps. Glary Utilities CCleaner

2. Run a full disk check.

3. Uninstall your video driver and see if it still does it.

4 Take your case off, reseat your power sockets and make sure a rat hasn't moved in.
