Post subject:  horizontal lines on startup + crashes

a few days ago medal of honor started crashing on me, sometimes freezing up the pc and not even allowing me to use the reset button to restart. after a few tries it started up with horizontal lines/dashes all over the screen. windows wouldn't load and gave me a bsod with a message about the gpu.

i tried to restart into safe mode but that froze up on me as well. it asked me for startup repair so i ran that, which supposedly found no solution at all . yet it had fixed whatever was wrong, as it started again like it should and the glitches on the screen were gone.
everything is working normally again :thumbl:

i've run a video memory stress tester now and it didn't find anything wrong either.

so what exactly is/was wrong ffs?

my specs:
gigabyte 965p ds4 motherboard
xfx 8800 gtx
intel core 2 duo 6600
3 gig 800mhz ddr2
windows 7 32bit

my 8800 did something similar... was the memory on its way out... bit the dust about 2 weeks later

i'm not expecting it to last too much longer no, but as long as it doesn't crash too hard i'm sticking with it. i'm planning on buying an entirely new pc when this one dies as it is 4 years old now and it shows.

i was hoping for a few more months until the bf3 beta came out but i'm not sure if i can be arsed with waiting anyway.

Mine does that about once per month on boot for 3 years now. Only when booting, and very infrequently

it's completely dead now, good thing i made backups so i can still get to my stuff using my laptop in the mean time. (after reinstalling the damn thing as that had to crash on me as well   )

so the big question now is, should i buy a semi cheap gpu now and hold out with buying a new computer until september?
or should i just go ahead and buy a new one now?

the main goal is to be able to play battlefield 3 and the elder scrolls 5 skyrim on maximum settings at 1920x1200 when they're released. so if newer hardware is being released in a few months, i might be better of getting that rather than current generation components. i have no idea if anything new will be released between now and september/october (bf3 beta release) though, so is it worth it to wait?
(it would cost me the extra price of a low-medium end gpu in the mean time as well)

I would wait till BF3 is released , besides the parts will be cheaper by then and you can build an awesome PC , I sold an 8800GT for £30 recently , just buy another cheap 8800 for now ;)

:o7:

brink and the witcher 2 will be out in a few weeks as well, so my main reasons to not buy a new pc now would be if for instance a gtx590 wouldn't be able to properly play skyrim maxed out, or if there'll be a new generation of graphics cards out in june or so.

is there any new hardware anticipated to be released soon?
