Post subject:  crashes...

over the last week... ive had 2 crashes a day... 1 has just froze my pc and have to do forced restart, other freezes for 5 seconds then restarts automatically... (though automatic restart is disabled)

also while this has been happening sometimes my pc doesnt want to load after a restart (or sometimes in the morning), it freezes on the very first screen about half way through... i then have to turn pc off, unplug harddrive plug back in then it works...

thoughts?

(and eko dont say its cuz i have XP)

its sata... weird thing is its only happened since my computers been moved to the other side of the room (but never took the pc apart - never even left the desk) i'll swap it out with one of the others plugged in already see if it solves the problem...

Ok. Swapped leads, now its saying it can't load my windows profile and I'm stuck with 640x400 resolution and have no areas also no settings, like it reset back to a fresh install

nah havent installed anything... i think its the cable cuz when i turned pc on this morning... it loaded really slowly... but then when windows was loaded, it said that part of it couldnt be loaded or was corrupt... restarted it and took the side off... and it worked fine (but that doesnt explain y it crashes mid use when nothing is being moved on the case?)

Have you tried moving it back across the room and see what happens?

for me thats what happens to my sata leads that are in the hhd, they stick out a little, so they do get knocked out slightly
when I take the side off (need to invest in those funky 90* angle ones)

so its back to Geoff

oh prior to retest

The kicker with that one is its already on a 90' sata cable, replaced with. 2nd 90' one...though according to hdd checker it was fine, the delayed write errors have just started... Just means plugging back in parents pc to fix that... Go figure...

i take it your writing to 1 disk and not a raid group?
i would say the motherboard controller is fecked
you dont write directly to disk it goes to disk cache and then it is destaged to disk
the fact that the disk works fine in another computer ( did u write a large random file as a min test? ) says its not the disk or disk cache
i dont know the tools in windows but they must exist , basically if you where to in unix terms DD a 1 GB file of zeros and read it back and write it again a million times over it would not still be a 1GBfile of zeros
also what is your nonpaged pool utilisation when the erorrs occure?

1 disk yea and that was the first thought, so I replaced mobo and didn't solve the problem, I did copy accross about 70gb worth of stuff just before it did it (was trying to see if it'd break and it did) rest of what u said I didn't understand... I've put it in my parents pc to diskcheck then put back in mine ... Takes between 3 and 6 months depending how much pc is used for it to feck up like this... Used to happen more often but I found if I turn switch off on psu on the back, it delayed it by 3 to 6 months (also replaced psu)
