Well the old machine is looking looking a bit ropey
I'd like to find a machine about £800
(preferably with one of those 9 months but now pay later things....)
I have a 19" CRT and not sure if I want to go to flat panel yet...although gaining a foot of space in my dining room might be nice....
Current:
AMD 64 3200
2gb ram
XFX7800 gfx card AGP
1 x 200gb hdd
1 x 80 gb hdd
2 average dvd-writers

the AGP graphics could be holding it back, and i'm guessing you're on 939...which means new card, new mobo, new memory.....

i think now is not a good time to upgrade your current spec dude
wait till dx10 cards come out, and for AM2 boards to become a bit more robust...maybe 6 months or so?

I agree 100 % with above reasoning (that's why my current, far lower spec'd rig than yours) is going to have to wait for an upgrade

wow your 400W PSU powers that
well..enermax are good but, i would have thought that gfx card would suck the voltage out of it!

Explain the reason for why a hardware product is affected by a software (DX10) product, i dont see why a DX9 card wont run DX10 the same for at least the first 6-8 months after release and also how many games will fully support DX10 as soon as it comes out?

all software does is allow one bit of hardware to talk to another bit of hardware, like a translator...but dx10 cards speak a lanugage with more bits in than dx 9 cards, so DX9 (the software) can talk to DX10 cards (the hardware), because they understand, but DX10 (the software) can't talk to DX9 cards (the hardware) because they language is too complicated...
sort of...

You can already buy DX10 compatible GFX cards.
Ie , 7900 GTX, 7950 etc etc etc
Looking at AIM's PC, I would say the GFX card is limiting - particularly as its running in AGP.
Although if you wanna upgrade then definitely get the Intel Conroe Dual Core chip, will be the best thing out for some time irrespective of AM2's and will clock to 3.6Ghz on AIR.
You will need PCi-E in your life also - plus if you buy one of the Nvidia GFX cards mentioned above preferably ones made by BFG technologies you will be set for DX10.
Have to disagree with RD regarding the PSU, you add anymore GFX power to your rig and your PSU will melt. I also have bought Enermax (best for PSU's IMO) but went for the 600W noisetaker just in case I want to add a GFX for Sli or start some serious clocking ! (Noticed you were having some issues with COD2 Gfx's RD ? Maybe PSU related ??)
So to those people who say now is not a good time for an upgrade - my answer is - IT NEVER IS !! There is always something coming down the line that is bigger, better , faster or shinier !!
If you are going to upgrade just think about what is coming down the line !
And primarily that is :-
Vista
DX10
Vista will need 64 bit CPU, dual core will be even better = Conroe FTW
DX10 = Any of the cards above !
Everything else is personal preference ie , how much and how fast the RAM you want, for HDD's weather you want 10k RPM or 7.2k RPM SATA2 obviously !
..........and that is it !!
Ps. Definately go for an LCD wide screen at some point - defo the way forward !
PPs. Build it yourself don't buy a ready made unit on the never never as it will cost you approximately 30-40% more than necessary !
