@ everyone, at the end of the day, it depends on what your main priority for having a pc is...........
gaming - well some still say amd
workstation, encoding video, gaming, virus scans, burning dvd etc all at the same time- intel
seriously though 4400x2 can do the above too (as i've done it)

CoolMan=GCHQ= wrote: do not get the intel, their dual cores suck, they are only 2 cpus on one chip and are not integrated nearly as well as the amd equivelent, Pretty much every review i have seen says intel just cobbled something together so they would have a dual chip the same as amd. This is one of many similer reviews http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-10442_7-6389077-1.htmlSimply put, the intel sucks for gaming(and most other things) and is a lot more expensive
Woah, check the date of that article out matey, Nov 2005. The Conroes are nothing like the Intel processors of old.
Col - if you go with AMD you're a fool...I mean I know you are already, but that's besides the point And I'm not an Intel fanboy, I've got a X2 3800. But if I had the option of going back in time and holding off for a couple more months so I could get in on some hawt Conroe acktshun, then I would. Only reason AMD would be considered is because the Conroes don't have any decent motherboards just yet afaik. But that's only a matter of time.

dont base your choice on a poll...most people have no idea what they're talking about
I'm not voting...since i'm one of those people.
Grampsy or chadk or someone might have a real answer
if you're going to just say...youu didnt ask for the best...just what i would buy...then the answer is i havent a clue (would have to look up/research them both...and i'm not going to )

I voted amd cos i use a AMD X2 4800+ and its simply awesome.
Ive used loads of intel chips and most sucked but on my last machine i converted to an amd and ill never go back. My old xp 2800 was brilliant for the price amd's just run a little hotter, cost a little less.
Ive heard a lot of stuff about the conroe but does anyone here use one?

The Core 2 Duo is a great chip, but finding a compelely compatible motherboard with crossfire or sli support seems very difficult. Try to find one for sale with these features without visiting / cross referencing other sites. Very tricky.

Currently, Intel have the fastest and apparently most overclockable processors. This has forced AMD to come up with some spectacular price cuts across the board If you have a great urge to switch to Intel by replacing everything you'll be shelling out loads of moolah
Coolman is spot on regarding the dual core technology; Intel bodged two physically separate cores into one chip package that have to communicate via the FSB, which is shared by the entire PC, hence large amounts of cache - hardly an elegant engineering solution AMD have both cores on the same piece of silicon and communicating via dedicated hypertransport links - allowing the recent reduction in cache sizes with the transition to 65nm (well, that and it saves money ). The AMD chips do indeed do more per clock cycle, which gave rise to the 'XX00+' naming system, as their clock speeds were the supposed equivalent of the higher-clocked Intels.
The new Intel chips are faster, but you're paying for the privilege...

The Intel chip is acutually vastly superior, it has the lowest voltage and heat of any chip out there and due to that fact can be overclocked much more than any rival AMD chip. The virtualisation allows not only gamers to take advantage of these chips but servers aswell, the VT gives much better performance on a budget wen used for virtual PC's and servers. The way that the Intel chip works allows for coolin by 2 motherboard fans, rather than a massive heatsink and fan. This feature while not good for overclocking has much pottential for home users. All in all the chip has huge functionality in home, office, server and gamer markets. While this chip will most likely be the last in the dual core range with quad core processors coming out next june. AMD are goin to release a new chip soon that is supposed to be better, though with the massive amount of usabililty in multiple ares i think that AMD will only ramp up the core speed for gamers. Intel will probably have some more X6xxx series coming out though so AMD will still be matched. All in all the Intel chip is a great chip, AMD chips currently available are better than some of the lower end Intel chips though this is the first time Intel have had a chip that has gone head to head with AMD.
