Post subject:  Help a n00b!

I bought a store-bought rig and it runs BF2 (a new purchase :)) quite slowly. It's only got 256MB RAM and a nVidia GeForce 6100.

I want to buy more RAM and a decent graphics card, but i don't know what i'm doing. I looked on Ebay at some 1gb DDR ram sticks, and it kept telling me not to buy it unless my motherboard was (insert bollocks here).

I can't even find what make my motherboard is, or where my shoes are for that matter.

So, how do i know what my motherboard is? What type of RAM should i be getting? what graphics card is cheapish, yet powerful enough to make BF2 not seem like it's running in bullet-time?

Right, first of all please edit the religious title...

Then download CPU-Z. Its a handly little tool to show what is exactly in your computer.

Take some screenshots of all the pages and post them. It will make thing ALOT easier... :D :D

Well...

It has 512MB RAM. It looks like someone has added another 256MB, since you said that's all it had plus the two sticks are made by different manufacturers.

It's running PC2100 memory on the 133 divider, since the CPU HTT is 200 MHz but that isn't really a bottleneck.

It'll be hard to tell what you need for memory, but don't buy any 1GB sticks, just get 2x512MB. Go to http://www.crucial.com/uk and use their memory selector since it might offer you guaranteed compatibility even with a Gateway machine. You just need to know your system model number.

i added the extra 256 stick, stole it from my old rig (which is now on the scrap heap thanks to a REALLY hot day, the fan breaking and then me screwing up the overclocking)

thanks for the site link btw Myx, i found some RAM that fits.

<----- What does all this mean btw?

Now, is my Nvidia GeForce 6100 up to scratch? it's onboard (which i'm told makes it worse). Don't want top of the range, bordering-on-precognition gubbins, just a decent graphics card that doesn't run on steam power.

The graphics is a bit poor, but the memory upgrade is a must regardless.
