Seriously, mine has self destructed, heaters been packed up for a couple of months so its been on Economy but now drum had seperated from whatever holds it in place, got about 5 inches of play around the front of the drum. Sounded like a jumbo taking off on fast spin before I stopped using it.

Question is not what is most reliable but whats the odds on a new one going wrong. Is it worth spending less and getting less guarantee. Eg I can get a graded one for £220 inc delivery with one years guarantee or same machine for £250 with 2 year guarantee. 3 Year extended is about £99 on top or the single year so not paying that.

In general I'm of the opinion if it hasn't had any fault in the first year it'll probably be alright, ours is about 5yrs old and hasn't been a problem, the other half lived in a shared house of 5 girls and they bought a new one which lasted 4 yrs in that house and well after.

Pfft, get something that lasts.

we had a washing machine for in excess of 12 years without issue - however, we never used its spin cycle, and instead had a seperate special spin drier (can get them for about 30 quid... second hand like - doesn't DRY it like a tumble drier, tis just a centrifuge basically, spins fast and flings water out).

Wash, then spin them in the spinner instead of the washing machine so it doesn't feck that up, and then hang the laundry out.

Personally the more modern an appliance is, the more likely it is to break. They've definately made some white goods have a lifetime of only 24 months... so that you'll buy another after a few years to keep their income going.

Garuntees are a joke - if it fails within 12 months you could take them to court and state that it hasn't lasted a "reasonable" amount of time - therefore get your full refund back anyways. The garuntee's just ensure people go "Oh, out of garuntee, therefore I can't do anything and will just have to replace it" - BANDICOOT! Garuntees are now used to fleece you for extra cash - appliances should last a lot longer than just 12 months, so why do they only garuntee it to last such a pityfully short time unless they know it's going to go wrong.

As you can see, I am highly cynical of things... and don't trust any manufacturer further than i can kick their shareholders.

I know a thing or two about insurance, and the risk of your insurance company paying out on your extended guarentee is tiny.....about the most profitable type of business for them........takt the risk yourself I say! Put whatever premium you planned to pay on all the kit you buy into an account. Odds are you'll have enough for whatever broke when it comes to it.

and with a washing machine - get a top brand with lots of well engineered parts available. They last and when they do break their engineers visit and fix in no time therefore not too expensive- Miele everytime for me! Pick one up second hand (less than 2 years old if your lucky) and it will still have 3 years of it's manufacturer warrenty.
